For Christimas this past year, we got the opportunity to visit Bulgaria for the festive season. We took a trip with my dad to Borovets Ski Resort in the Rila Mountains for some fresh air, skiing, family fun and a fair few Gluhweins!
My dad has spent some time in Bulgaria and always raves about the warm people and some of the beatuiful countryside, so he was excited to show us some of it. The Rila Mountains, where Borovets Ski Resort is situated, are in the southwest of the country and one of the highest mountian ranges in the Balkans. The name 'Rila' apparently comes from the Thracian for 'well-watered mountain', due to the many glacial lakes and hot springs in the area.
It was a bit early in the season for snow, but it was a perfect place to learn to ski for first-timers. The resort wasn't too busy yet, so there was hardly any queueing for the ski lifts. And it was sunny every day. We couldn't have asked for better for our festive family getaway.
In the mountains...
Learning to ski... Watch out, newbies on the run!
Some fresh mountain air... and Gluhwein!
We stayed at the lovely Winter Palace Hotel, where every morning I got to watch the sun rise over the pistes, and we were treated to some of the local hospitality and delicasies in the evening...
