One fine day, a while ago, we went with Luca to meet my Estonian friend Merilin. I decided that we should try something new and a bit different, but still stay in central. When I found this place on Design My Night, I was a bit worried that as it is located in Oxford Circus maybe it will be full of tourists and not so great - but oh was I wrong! [Yes, I am now officially a Londonite, complaining about the tourists ;)]
The London Cocktail Club - http://www.londoncocktailclub.co.uk - where gangster's paradise meets cocktail heaven.
First I walked past it a couple of times (I didn't do my research - not knowing it was a basement bar), then I was a bit shocked about how it looked...in a good way. Quite different from what I expected.
It was so busy, but we were lucky enough to get a table so we were sorted. I think we wouldn't have survived for long without a table. First of all, where would we put the 10 cocktails we ordered all at once, haha. We went really overboard there...
I had extremely high expectations of the cocktails and I wasn't disappointed. I think we had about 10x more cocktails than on a usual night out. Everything was so interesting and cool that we just couldn't stop ordering more and more. One of my favorite cocktails of the night was the Brixton Riot (3rd photo). I found a recipe for it on their website:
12.5ml Martini Rosato
12.5ml Lychee liquor
25ml Cranberry Juice
25ml Apple Juice
12.5ml Stock Syrup
1/2 Passion Fruit
12.5 Wray & Nephew over proof
Add all the ingredients together and shake. Double strain into a martini glass and float the 1/2 passion fruit shell that you gutted for the drink. Light the Wray & Nephew in a wine glass until it burns a constant blue flame. Transfer it into the shell and serve!

Luca and I are massive fans of tequila, and it made me laugh to think these chalk outlinings are made for people who are like - one tequila, two tequila, three tequila...floor! (Hey hey, Bianca!)
Since I have worked in a cocktail bar myself, I know exactly how stressful it can be when 50 people come in at once and everyone orders two different, very special cocktails. It could end up being a total nightmare. But these bartenders were proper pros. Everything was fast and still perfect. When a couple of times it took a little bit longer, I was very pleased that someone came to let us know that they hadn't forgotten us, but just that they needed a tiny bit more time.
The night was full of surprises all the way through. I was again surprised when the bill came, and it wasn't million pounds, it was totally fine.
Since I was so happy with my visit there, I'm planning to try all their other venues too.
You know, as Benjamin Franklin used to say: “In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is Freedom, in water there is bacteria.” I would like to add that in cocktail there is Awesomeness.
Here you can see the Pot Noodle...a kind of Bloody Mary, which I go on about a lot on the 'morning after the night before'. When this arrived at the table it raised an eyebrow or two. We ended up bonding with all the other people around us, because everyone wanted to know what is this cool thing Luca is drinking...or is he really eating a Pot Noodle??
